The Schooner Western Union, built in Key West in 1939, is the oldest working wooden schooner in the United States. She is currently at Merrill-Stevens Shipyard receiving some restoration work.
Rich in history, this 130’ classic ship was originally built to tend and service the undersea telegraph Western Union cable lines and currently she holds a prestigious place on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1984 the Western Union was purchased by Vision Quest who renamed her the New Way. The ship was used in a program to help troubled adolescents learn honor, self-discipline and a work ethic. In 1997 she returned to Key West and her original name was restored. The Schooner Western Union has spent the last ten years offering day sails, sunset sails and private charters under the stewardship of Historic Tours of America.
The Schooner Western Union Preservation Society (S.W.U.P.S.) is a non-profit corporation founded for the purpose of restoring, maintaining and operating the historic Schooner Western Union in Key West. Future plans for the vessel include private charters for up to 76 passengers for such events as weddings, corporate functions, private parties, and more.
